In this video, Dr. Joe Camisa explains myofascial decompression, commonly known as cupping, which works by lifting and decompressing tissue rather than compressing it. Biomechanically, the suction anchors the connective tissue layers while the clinician or patient moves, breaking up restrictions to restore smooth sliding between fascial layers. Neurophysiologically, the treatment stimulates sensory receptors to reset muscle tone, whether calming a hypertonic muscle in spasm or activating a hypotonic muscle. Biochemically, cupping draws fresh blood flow and oxygen to the targeted area while clearing out stagnant fluids, promoting healing and improving functional mobility when combined with corrective exercise.
