Shoulder pain is a common ailment, affecting 18% to 26% of adults. The shoulder, a ball-and-socket joint, has the most range of motion of all our joints, making it vulnerable to instability. We are designed to generate power with our ball-and-socket joints, therefore, in addition to mobility, the shoulder requires stability and strength to avoid injury. Power often originates in the hips and is transmitted through a stiff core into the shoulder for tasks such as throwing, pushing or pulling. Therefore, the shoulder is exposed to a host of injury mechanisms through sports and daily activities. Physical therapy and acupuncture are common treatments for shoulder pain.
